Green Team Spring Update

Linda Clarke-Tucker, Ministry Lead of MFEP and Science Educator/STEAM Coordinator at Mother Seton Academy in Baltimore, MD, sends us this update.

The Green Team Initiative at Mother Seton Academy has been in full activation mode this past Spring with continued Green Team neighborhood trash pickups, guest speakers, Earth Day Art, The Eco Warriors of the Future Competition, and our community art project at Ujamaa Cove.

Caprice Jackson, National Ambassador for Sustainability in Fashion, visited the school and spoke with our young people about repurposing old garments, the detriment of fast fashion, and its harm to the planet.

The students had an opportunity to take an environmental trip to Living Classrooms’ Masonville Cove location to learn about water quality, urban heat islands, and how polluted runoff affects our waterways.

Ujamaa Cove is a pocket park managed by our community partner, O’Hara Development. We were challenged to contribute to the beautification of the park.  Our 8th-grade students were tasked to create images for a storage container in the park. Our 6th and 7th grade painted the images as a mural. The park will be dedicated in late August.

We are also pleased to announce that Mother Seton Academy has garnered Honorable Mention, 4th place in the Eco-Warriors of the Future Schools Challenge held by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works. The theme for this year's competition was recycling.  This is our first year entering the competition with the intention of continuing to enter future competitions in an effort to raise awareness among our young people about the environment and the issues at hand in Baltimore City.
